Island Mljet, Day 2: Discovering the Island

I woke up early enough not to miss first dusk in Sobra. Even though I had no alarm clock, I instinctively woke up just on time to see the intense orange light coming through the window. The conclusion was: there’s no time to waste!

I grabbed my camera bag and tripod and literally ran out of house. The colors were amazing and the sea was perfectly calm. The island could not welcome me in better way with this opportunity for some nice waterscape photos.

It's gonna be a good day

After the morning coffee and packing necessary things, we were en route to Pomena and Polace – two villages located on the western part of the island. Since I didn’t have enough time to do this before the trip, first thing to do was to find an internet connection and browse through the island map and Google Earth to plan each day on the island, so we don’t waste time on thinking where to go and what to see. After two hours of planning, we decided to spend the rest of the day swimming and viewing the western part of the island. Of course, the end of the day was reserved for shooting, when the light will be the best.

A small digression:
**The moment you set your foot on any Dalmatian island in the summer, you immediately get your own fly, your own wasp, your own hungry cat under the restaurant table and, of course – your own mosquitoes. Infinite number. :) The only exception was that on Mljet wasps also come in infinite numbers. It was literally impossible to defend from them, especially if you’re eating something. Those are some very greedy flying creatures. And as for mosquitoes, we were yet to learn our lesson…**

We’ve found a spot on the rocky shore turned to west to swim a little and to wait for the sunset. The sea was perfect, crystal clear and warm and I’ve had very pleasant time. Until the late afternoon when the mosquito invasion begun. They were literally everywhere, I could see couple of them on my hand at the same time. They were fearless and very hungry and I was going crazy with it. Of course, the priority for the next morning was to buy some mosquito repellent for the skin.

He, he, no matter how fast the mosquitoes were, they had some casualties too. :))

The sunset was promising, but at it’s very end, the sun hid behind the clouds and it was very disappointing…

Watch your step

Rocky coast

…and just when I thought that was it, the sun peeped through the clouds for a few moments. Enough time to make this wonderful photo of the fishing boats in the distance.

Now that was really wonderful surprise! :)
